Melanie Safka was a singer/songwriter widely known for the 1971 hit Brand New Key, her 1970 version of :Ruby Tuesday" and her compositions "What Have They Done To My Song Ma", "Beautiful People" and :"Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)".  Melanie won an Emmy for writing the lyrics to the theme song for the TV series "Beauty and the Beast".
